Whole Food Dog Supplements

Posted by Laura Paulisich on

I remember reading that dogs need natural food just like humans. It made so much sense, and so another journey began to navigate how to have my dogs live naturally! You would think it would be easier!!! After years of learning, I know now to get the calcium & phosphorus ratio correct and to offer whole food supplements to compensate for our dwindling nutrition from nature.

This is roughly what we do for cultivating our healthy & happy dogs with whole food supplements (in addition to feeding grassfed raw meaty diet):

-Phytoplankton: 1/16 of a teaspoon most days (once daily for healthy dogs; twice daily for immune-challenged dogs or as directed by a veterinarian)

-Probiotics (best kept in the fridge for maximum freshness): 1/8 teaspoon daily (1-30 lb dogs);  1/4 tsp daily (31-60 lbs); 1/2 tsp daily (61-100 lbs); 3/4 tsp daily (over 100 lbs) PLUS FEED SAUERKRAUT FOR FOOD-BASED PROBIOTICS

-Fruits & Veggies (research which ones are safe or use dried whole food supplements): 5-10% of diet daily (gives dogs an extra boost because of the phytonutrients and carotenoids found only in fruits and veggies) Dried organic berries: 1/2 teaspoon daily with food (10-25 lb dogs); 3/4 tsp (26-50 lbs); 1 tsp (51-75 lbs); 1 1/2 tsp (76-100 lbs); 2 tsps (over 100 lbs)

-Greens (research which ones are safe or use dried whole food supplements): helps dogs get a variety of nutrients including phytonutrients only found in fruits and veggies; dried greens: 1/8 teaspoon daily (1-30 lb dog); 1/4 tsp daily (31-60 lbs); 1/2 tsp daily (61-100 lbs); 1 tsp daily (over 100 lbs)

-Dried organ meat: helps when having trouble sourcing all of the different organ meats 1/2 teaspoon daily (1-25 lb dog); 3/4 tsp daily (26-50 lbs); 1 tsp daily (51-75 lbs); 1 1/2 tsp daily (76-100 lbs); 2 tsp daily (over 100 lbs)
